Smoke Detectors The Ontario Fire Code now requires that you have a working smoke detector on each and every level of your home. The fines for non-compliance are very substantial. Heaven help you if you have a fire that results in injury. Get it done now, before you forget.
You may wish to consider a carbon monoxide detector to protect you from that invisible and odourless gas which can kill. If you have one, make sure it is installed close to floor level. Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air and fills the room from the floor up. If the detector is installed higher than your bed, when the alarm goes off ….. YOU WONT HEAR IT.
While we are on the topic of Fire Code, if you have a small rental property, please ensure that it complies with the updated fire code in every respect. THE UPDATED fire Code is applied retroactively. The Fire Department has been focusing on larger rental buildings in the past few years but is now looking at duplexes, triplexes etc. If they inspect your property, you will be charged immediately for deficient smoke detectors and will have very limited time to resolve other deficiencies. And as above, Heaven help you if you have a fire and someone is injured: jail time is only part of the penalty.
